RWANDA
TRAVEL & GORILLA TREKKING
Many visitors
to Rwanda have remarked that the physical beauty of this country,
with its spectacular volcanoes rising above dense tropical
forests, combined with the gentle hills, valleys and lakes
of the savannah, make Rwanda the most beautiful of all African
destinations.
This tiny land-locked
central African country was wracked by years of civil war,
but today peace has returned to ‘the land of a thousand
hills’, and the great Mountain gorillas which Dian Fossey
made so famous, are again accessible to the traveller.
Rwanda boasts a wide
variety of wildlife, with the Parc National des Volcans in
northern Rwanda being the home to the world’s largest
concentration of endangered mountain gorillas, where the traveller
can view them in their natural habitat at fairly close range.
Although Rwanda is best known for its wealth of primates,
it also has one of Africa’s most diverse bird populations,
with a staggering 670 different bird species recorded in Rwanda.
The main arrival point
into Rwanda is the capital of Kigale, which is linked by air
to neighbouring countries of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, or
from Johannesburg in South Africa.
